Do you believe in predetermined "soul mate"?

Do you believe in soul mate? Why or why not?

Here is a little background information to my question. As you know who we are is determined by our genes. Binding together in certain sequences from paired nucleotides (A to T and G to C); a spiral double helix is formed. This spiral double helix differs from person to person, giving each and every one a unique genetic blueprint. This genetic blueprint is responsible for our physical features, pheromones, intelligence, genetic disorders and even personality. Of course, the environment around us plays a role in unlocking our genetic potential. However, for the most part who we are is predetermined by our genes. Does this mean that before we are born we already have a potential soul mate?

Thanks for all the answers so far. Please give a logical or scientific reason as to how you arrived at your conclusion. I'm hoping for a philosophical discussion. :P

No.

No on a scientific level, we are all randomly created with no goal or purpose, and it is by coincidence we exist. The only reason people are attracted to each other is due to similar interests and an evolutionary instinct to mate.

No on a spiritual level. I am fearfully and wonderfully made to worship one person, Him. I have been given free will to better glorify Him. I am always changing because I am always growing. The world is confusing, but sometimes you meet someone who is growing in the same direction and your attraction (as well as instinct to mate) is a combination of both our free wills leading us to that spot by chance. Nothing was predetermined, but we took advantage of the situation and do our best to worship Him together.

Within all that stuff you mentioned are genes that determine your personality (just as you said). This means that within you are perceptions that you pick up of other people- your impression of them, your tolerance, your preferences, etc...you can get along with far more than just one person on the face of the Earth.

If there was only one person on the planet that you are destined to be with, then it is far too unlikely for you to ever find them. What you DO find are people that you like and can get along with. Soul mates do not exist, except for people looking for romantic explanations to the people they meet.

Sort of. I think there is someone out there for us, but it's dependent on the choices we make. I believe that we all have many paths we can choose to take in our lifetime, and the result of making "good" choices that are true to ourselves will lead us to the right person. Those that choose to remain in abusive relationships, or leading abusive lifestyles will probably find themselves with the wrong person. But they can easily get out of those whenever they want and back on their "true" path so to speak.

Ignore the science for a sec and let's focus on the philosophy. Let say you have a super power or magic that let you know for sure who God or Cupid or a love god/goddess want you to end up with. This being said you were meant to love an abusive person and you do. Does this still mean you are on the wrong path? or the right path? Who's then to say what really is the right path?

A second example would be POV. People looking into a masochist/sadist relationship would think the masochist is being abused. However, being in that relationship the masochist loves getting abused and the sadist love giving it to him/her. Does that mean they haven't found the right person? Are they still missing something? Does this mean they need to make better choices than what they're making atm?

There is someone out there who is a better match for any of us than anyone else out there - I don't think that's a controversial idea, actually its impossible to argue against successfully. Whether you want to call that person your "soulmate" or simply your ideal other is a question of semantics.

Does this mean that you would still look for the perfect match even if you already found your "soul mate"? There's a social psychology theory out there that we are screwed in love due to the romanticism portrayed by Hollywood and literature. In short, Hollywood and books like Twilight inject ideas of the perfect mate or "soul mate" into our heads. This create an illusion that nothing is ever good enough and we end up believing there's something better. Truth is nothing is ever the best.

Lol, it's alright. I'm just not good with feelings. When girls tell me they love me I would always ask "why?" I can never accept "because I love you" as a decent answer.
