Why are average celebrities so overrated beauty wise?

For example, George Clooney. Take away the fame and money and if he passed by you (the girls who find him so dreamy) while walking down the street you wouldn't even notice him. And if he hit on you, you'd probably think of him as an old pervy creep.

A female example is Halle Berry. She is a token, I understand. But again, take the fame and money away and if she passed you by the street you'd just assume she's a ghetto hoodrat.

Jessica Alba, average and you wouldn't give her a second glance if she walked right past you.

Tom Cruise. You'd just assume he's a shorty who is obnoxious.

Part of it is that to some extent, people may find fame attractive in and of itself. My gut is that this is more common (not universal) with women, but it probably works somewhat in both directions.

Part of it is that 'everybody' doesn't think most of those celebrities are so hot. But -some- people do. Of the four women you mentioned, one I find smoking in makeup, one I find smoking when she's in thin mode not fat mode which probably tells you which one, and the other two are good looking but not shockingly so. I suspect its the same for the men. My wife thinks Depp is cute but short, the rest you mention she's say are good looking but not like 'wow', and doesn't think tom cruise is good looking at all. But there are some others she does. I -have- met women who think each of those guys is like the hottest guy ever, I assume each is genuinely -some- women's type.

I think one final factor is that there is some part of us, on an emotional level, that feels like we know celebrities. We did not evolve to handle media. When we see someone frequently, and know about them, we feel like they are part of our circle of friends, and so we're more likely to have a crush on them.

all of the women I listed are considered too thick and fat in the white culture. But they're tokens, which is why people claim to find them attractive. But again, like I said, if any of them walked past you, you'd only assume they are hoodrats

Celebrity culture. They are built up to be gods, many people are very influenced by the hype that surrounds celebrities. If you've ever seen people react to meeting a celebrity in person you should realize the effect this can have. Its all an illusion.

Personally I'm not bothered by any of them, in fact I don't even know who some of those people are, such is my level of not giving a shit. Although I would argue they are all at least quite a bit above average looking, just not the gods they are made out to be.

id definitely have drooled over Leonardo DiCaprio if he wasn't famous and I passed him in the streets, when he was younger (titanic and romeo & juliet days) he was extremely handsome imo, nowadays he looks average which is a shame as I thought he'd be the type of guy who always looked hot.i think George Clooney is very handsome too, id definitely notice him as he looks very mature and sophisticated. money (and fame) don't factor into whether I find a celeb or a regular guy attractive or not.

i agree that a lot of the celebs you named look average at best but I wouldn't think halle berry was a 'ghetto hoodrat' she was very pretty in the Catwoman film, I hated her short hair style though and I don't think she's extremely beautiful like everyone makes out

The makeup artists definitely help. The thing is men don't care if the woman is wearing makeup or not, as long as she looks hot at that moment. Most guys won't even notice if a woman has makeup, unless she did a bad job putting it on. Which is way you hear so many guys saying they don't like makeup, and then gravitate to the women that are wearing makeup.

A lot of these people have confidence and a certain personality. I think a lot of people would look at them even if they didn't have the money or fame. Confidence and smoothness is sexy in a guy, regardless of money or fame. And most celebrities have confidence.

For me it's the other way round. If you took away the fame and money from them they would be MORE attractive to me. Maybe because they have to be compared to all these other celebrity "beauties" it makes them look more average on the attractiveness scale overall. But if they were just normal (by normal I mean infamous with average income and no fame) people then they would be more attractive because the people they would be compared to would be less attractive.
