Why do we consider celebrities who are of average or below-average attractiveness to be great beauties?

I don't understand why celebrities of average or below-average levels of attractiveness are considered physically beautiful by people. Some examples of average looking celebrities, to me, would be: Blake Lively, Alyson Hannigan, Gwyneth Paltrow, Penelope Cruz, January Jones, Jennifer Lawrence and Reese Witherspoon

I find Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lawrence, and Alyson Hannigan kind of cute, but not exceptionally attractive. Blake Lively is ugly, to me, except for her figure. January Jones is simply average, as well as Gwyneth Paltrow, and Penelope Cruz isn't that attractive.

Emma Watson is pretty and kind of cute, I believe, but I feel like memes and the internet have sexualized her so much that she is considered some sort goddess, and way more beautiful than she actually is. She isn't super attractive. I feel like if I passed her on the street, I wouldn't stare.

Well Blake Lively is really pretty :P And appearance is not what makes Jennifer Lawrence so love, or her movies, it's the way she acts. If you've seen the oscars interview or the fall or other interviews you could see that she is like the weird, awkward silly girl, which basically astonished others. She doesn't try to impress and she doesn't act like a stuck-up diva.
I never found Emma Watson stunning, I know I'm getting downvotes for that haha, but it's what I think.
I never found the others you mentioned super attractive.

attractiveness is relative. I also think that money, and talent add to attraction, thus why so many say some musician is "hot"

Fame brings a sense of power. And, as they say, power is sexy. Fame is sexy.
Yeah, those women you named aren't nearly as pretty as some women I see in Myrtle Beach. But, they are famous, which moves them up the collective conscienceness pedestal to a higher level. Doesn't mean it's accurate -- just perception.

Remember David Lee Roth from Van Halen? Women went nuts over him. But, that guy was butt ugly.

I feel like they get treated as if there is no woman/man on the face of the Earth that can compare in looks.

It's hilarious because when the extensions, heavy make up, photo editing comes off,
they look no different than your every day people (sometimes even worse).

Often it is reverse. No one is going to accuse Lindsay Lohan of being great actress but she is (was) beautiful. Then there are celebs like Tori Spelling or the Kardashians. I think that's just PR, the Kardashians look pretty hot now but they didn't before they could afford a make up artist, hair pro etc b4 they leave the house.

Gwyneth Paltrow has an ethereal, other worldly- not really sexy- beauty. Penelope Cruz is smoldering, fully dressed she gives me a hard on.

You said it yourself in the last paragraph!! People 'sexualize' and praise and worship these celebrities. It's a matter of scarcity, in a sense. You want what you can't have. It's not just the looks that people worship, it's the fact that people follow their life styles so intently, and people want to be them. Furthermore, they always are shown with amazing make up and pictures oftentimes have professional editing.

They probably have really good charisma to become that famous of actresses. Like Jennifer Lawrence is pretty plain, but she always looks like she's having fun. Same with a Emma Watson - it's her cuteness that appeals to people.

I think Gwenyth Paltrow is really pretty though. And I'd love to look as "average" as January Jones. :)

You either have really high standards for beauty or I just have very low standards. I honestly find every single one of those women very beautiful. I thinks it's probably me though, I have a hard time finding anyone ugly because I am ugly, so I find everyone else gorgeous. Mila Kunis without makeup looks like a model compared to me.

It might just be because they are celebrities too though. Although a lot of them get a lot of hate as well.
