In the USA, conservatives tried to steal the 2020 Presidential election with lies of fraud. No court in the land found these claims credible and the crooked candidate who lied raised $250 million on those lies from gullible citizens by telling them not to believe their eyes and ears and only believe what he tells them. Then the conservatives on the US Supreme Court ruled that women shouldn't have reproductive freedom. The government can now spy on women and laws were written to encourage citizens to "rat-out" any female suspected of ending a pregnancy. If a woman has a miscarriage, she can now be investigated for having an abortion that just last week was legal. The government can track women electronically if they are suspicious about what is or isn't in their wombs. Russian Conservative Vladimir Putin lied to his people saying that Ukrainians are all Nazis and need to be extinguished. American Conservative Donald Trump called Putin a "genius" because of this.

Big Brother is a fictional character and symbol in George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. He is ostensibly the leader of Oceania, a totalitarian state wherein the ruling party, Ingsoc, wields total power "for its own sake" over the inhabitants. In the society that Orwell describes, every citizen is under constant surveillance by the authorities, mainly by telescreens (with the exception of the Proles). The people are constantly reminded of this by the slogan "Big Brother is watching you": a maxim that is ubiquitously on display.

In modern culture, the term "Big Brother" has entered the lexicon as a synonym for abuse of government power, particularly in respect to civil liberties, often specifically related to mass surveillance.
