Why do some people tell you to "grow up" when you have a differing opinion to them?

Why do some people immediately resort to telling you to "grow up" and call you childish just because they hold a different opinion to you on something? Like if you're debating and they disagree with you, and then they say "grow the fuck up." Like why? Do you find it condescending/patronising when people say this? How do you respond?

Joking aside, they are pleading to your immaturity or naivety being the reason you're not understanding their view. These are usually the result of you being a kid and/or being sheltered, not knowing much about the world.

You need to understand that just because you hold a "different" view doesn't mean you're right, or that it's relevant. In fact the more diverse the view, the more likely you're suffering confirmation bias, just an insular conspiracy nut, if not just plain ignorant.

It's not enough to have opinions and "feelings" on things to define them as right or wrong.

They are simply looking for someone to attack to make themselves feel better. An attack without explanation is often times a Child putting her hand over her ears. Basically, what you are saying is against what they want to hear. Recognize it for what it is... that person is having a temper tantrum. They are immature and live in their own little reality and everyone else is to follow their own reality.

I completely agree. I would never tell someone I disagree with to grow up, I think it's quite patronising and on its own can be seen as immature in itself.

I have to remember "grow up, get a life, and the like" is a dead and glaringly unhappy being that feels the need to take their wrath out on another. They are, for the most part, easy to dismiss. One other thing to recall is often, people of this sort are action chasers, attention cravers, and controlling. --Often they are Narcissist but never see themselves that way. Grow up/Get a Life is a Negative Attention get but it is Attention. Complimenting another is a Positive Attention get but more importantly Attention. You can't discuss or fight with people like this BECAUSE either way they Win. They simply crave Attention and will upset you or make you happy to get Attention. They do NOT like to be wrong, questioned, and/or disagreed with, and are uber-sensitive (Stop attacking me) misguided souls.

I think it depends subject to subject. If you tell me it’s okay to steal from Target because you are broke , that’s a pretty childish mindset, right? I think debatable subjects like politics and such where there’s no right or wrong answer, people insult because they feel as if insulting someone will grant them power over the other person when in reality they are just exposing their childish behavior when they don’t get their way

They don't have an argument to back there own shit up. They only have there feelings as an argument and get upset you hurt there feefees and try to do the same by saying "grow up" to hurt your feefees. You can explain it 10 different ways with empirical evidence it still won't stick.

Some people are very naive and don’t know how the world really works, only how they wish it worked. So they are telling you to grow the fuck up because your opinions and views likely lack depth and aren’t thought out to their conclusions.

Yes, some people are like this. But this view is very subjective. So when one tells another to "grow the fuck up" they are basically saying "I'm right, you're wrong. Do something about it." They are saying that they are the correct judge of the situation and that their views are objectively right.
