Football was my first love, I played that up until I was 33. But your body can only do it so long, I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish, so I called it a day. I still watch as a spectator though. I always thought I’d coach, but I don’t know if I can handle coaching this generation of kids, or more accurately, their parents, lmao. I always hear stories of guys getting fired for coaching today’s kids the way I was coached growing up. If I can’t maintain discipline on a team with out interference from helicopter parents or kids just not having enough emotional resilience to be called out and punished for dumb mental mistakes or disorderliness counterproductive to running a practice, I don’t think I can properly do it.

I wouldn’t even be crazy mean, but when I grew up, if you showed up late to practice, you ran an extra lap. If you acted up, you’d run more laps. If you jumped offside, or false started, the whole team is running a lap or doing push-ups, to teach you that when one players screws up, the whole team suffers. When we watched film of the previous game on Monday once I was in high school, if you blew a play, Coach called you out in front of everyone. Now it’s like you can’t even hurt anyone’s feelings. I’m not trying to be a dick about it, I’d want the kids to have fun, but there are just certain times where a coach has to lay down the hammer to get the best out of you or to just generally maintain order.

My old high school coach would be spinning in his grave if he saw these, lmao. He was a guy who would tell you “run until you puke.” He never made you really do it, but he wanted you to think you got lucky when he stopped you short of it. Even my Pop Warner coaches in the 80s who were younger, every last one of them might be canned today. And guess what? We LOVED those guys. Don’t hit the kids, don’t put them in TRUE danger, and don’t punish them over things just related to their physical limitations, that’s fine. But running a football team requires a lot of discipline, and there’s always those few kids on every team who want to test you, so you need to be able to shut that down QUICK so you can focus on teaching the game of football.

Sorry, bit of a rant😅 Moral of the story: I’m learning how to play hockey now so I can just squeeze the last of my own athletic juice out of myself before I’m too old, because I don’t think I can coach the way they force you to these days, haha.
