Football is safe for a contact sport. Every year better equipment is developed and the rules of the game are changed for safety reasons. Still you have to go into it with the mindset that it is not good for your health. Rugby is like football without the pads. It has way more injuries than football.

Generally not, it's a dangerous contact sport.

Head injuries and broken bones, fingers, and such. lots of arthritis at minimum over time.

Too many drugs in society making the players too large.

Tonight’s incident is an outlier, in terms of an actual cardiac arrest on the field. But as a former player myself (obviously lower level than the pros, but played well into adulthood), “safe” is not one of the words I’d use to describe the sport of football. It’s more just a thing that’s very fun, very aggressive, very violent, very emotional, and it’s just an assumed risk that you might get totaled while playing.

"Safe" is relative. Safe or not I'm not overly concerned with safety of NFL players beyond the basics of injury prevention. There are far more dangerous (and less lucrative) professions.

Yes, they get a condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. It's really horrible and it is basically untreatable and as it turns out can't be prevented. Football is a deadly sport.
