Which professional sports team has the worst, most obnoxious, repulsive fans?

My vote: Buffalo Bills and Sabres
Ugh, they're the absolute worst! If their team wins, they become so arrogant and self-important. If their team loses, they are in such a bad mood that they drag everyone down with them. AND there's always at least one in a crowd because their hometown sucks so much, so they've scattered across the country like locusts!

Sadly, that wasn't a bigotry I was taught, but have learned first-hand for over 20 years.

That's right, Philadelphia, you certainly did.

There is a long-standing perception in sports of the Philadelphia fans as nasty, vitriolic enemies of all that is good and decent.

How much of that is true is open to debate, but not according to a recent poll by GQ magazine.

GQ voted the Philadelphia sports community, specifically fans of the Phillies and Eagles, the worst fans in America. The Phillies landed in the No. 1 spot, while Eagles fans were No. 2.

Fans of the red and green landed at the top of Adam Winer's "well-researched list" of "the bleacher creatures, bottle-throwers, couch-torchers, sexual harassers, projectile vomiters and serially indifferent bandwagon-hoppers marring our national landscape."

Here is a small piece of the article:

"Over the years, Philadelphia fans have booed Santa Claus, their own star players and, most absurdly, the recipient of America's very first hand transplant, whose crime was dribbling in a ceremonial first pitch—thrown with his freshly transplanted hand. Boooo! Admittedly, there are some things fans have cheered. Like Michael Irvin's career-ending neck injury and a fan being tased on the outfield grass. Things reached their nadir last season, when Citizens Bank Park played host to arguably the most heinous incident in the history of sports: A drunken fan intentionally vomited on an 11-year-old girl."

It's all true, of course. All of those events happened and certainly don't shine a favorable light on the City of Brotherly Love.

It's not all bad, though. There are some things about Philly to love, and I say that knowing full well that I live in supposed "enemy territory" in New York City.

You'll never find a better cheesesteak than in Philly (I'm a Geno's guy), "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is perhaps one of the funniest shows on television, and I have to admit, I've seen more Mets games at Citizen's Bank Park than Shea Stadium or Citi Field, simply because it was much closer when I lived in New Jersey.

So, it's not all bad, Philadelphia. I'll give you your due credit.

However, I can't defend or explain some of the behavior we've seen out of your fans. The article in GQ does get pretty harsh as well:

"The truth is this: All told, Philadelphia stadiums house the most monstrous collection of humanity outside of the federal penal system. 'Some of these people would boo the crack in the Liberty Bell,' baseball legend Pete Rose once said. More likely, these savages would have thrown the battery that cracked it."

Ouch.

Pretty harsh, though I think Pete Rose should have kept that little nugget to himself, as there's plenty to be said against him.

But can the actions of individual fans, such as the so-called "Pukemon," be used to lay a sweeping label across the entire fanbase?

GQ certainly thinks so and the poll doesn't lie. Results are results.

But the Philadelphia fanbase is also very passionate, selling out Phillies and Eagles games on a regular basis.

Now, how much of the Phillies' attendance is based on recent success is unknown to me, but I'm sure it certainly plays a role.

Regardless, what do you think? Are Philadelphia fans the worst in sports, or does that title belong to someone else?

I've always respected the Flyers. They're like an honorary original six team. Other expansion teams don't compare.

I have to disagree. Plenty of expansion teams were as good or better.
As in the New York Islanders who defeated the Flyers in their first of 4 consecutive Stanley Cups.
Penguins too and they joined in the 1967 expansion like the Flyers.

I'm not saying other expansion teams weren't good. They just lacked the feel of an original six team. Islanders come close though. Nassau Coliseum definitely took you back in time.

That said, I can't stand Sydney Crosby. Penguins are tainted by association.

Teams in cities that can't naturally produce ice don't deserve respect. Three in California, two in Florida, but none in Saskatchewan? Really?

And why on earth Columbus, Ohio? Capital city isn't enough of a reason. Very inconvenient location for out-of-staters. But tickets are affordable compared to similar stadiums and the fans aren't rude to visiting fans.

Las Vegas and Seattle are an abomination.

Saskatchewan has hockey; it doesn't have people. (*)
Why Columbus? Because Columbus is the largest city in Ohio and a lot of white-collar workers who can afford to go to NHL games.

Personally, I am a fan of Saskatchewan.
I am a fan of the National Lacrosse League.
Philadelphia Wings are a team in the league.
So are the Saskatchewan Rush who play in Saskatoon and do rather well in attendance.

Pushing the NHL to be more like the NFL has hurt the game. The almighty dollar became the driving force. Cities like Las Vegas and Seattle were chosen for profitablity not what's best for the league.

I've been to Knighthawks lacrosse game. I didn't not enjoy it, but prefer hockey.

Yes I do and Geneva is very nice. I remember eating at the Pizza Hut there. I think there's a Hampton Inn right on the north end of the lake...

I used to live in upstate NY near Albany but I worked in the Buffalo area, so I'd drive across NY Monday mornings and Friday evenings unless I stayed in a hotel in the Buffalo area for the weekend and just enjoyed life out there. I loved upstate NY. I miss it.

I was traveling through with my wife. This was circa 2007 or 2008. We were taking US-20 home; a long-trip, but I wanted her to experience more than just the Thruway.

You never considered moving instead of commuting ~6 hours to and from work? Don't get me wrong, I'd never move to Buffalo either, but maybe closer than Albany.

Well, I was a contractor, not a permanent employee. My wife had a permanent job. Besides, we moved to Missouri in 2011.

Do you catch many Blues games? At one point, I wanted to see a game in every stadium. I didn't get too far, but northern east US, south east Canada, Chicago, and Detroit are covered.

No I haven't. It just isn't worth the price. I'd go to an NLL game; more action, less expense.
HOWEVER, I used to have season tickets to RPI hockey. RPI is a Division 1 school and, when I attended, they won the national championship.

I know RPI, in Troy. I almost went there myself, but opted for Canisius in Buffalo. It really is a small world.

How could you go to Canisius and not love Buffalo? Or lacrosse? IIRC, Canisius is a D1 hockey school too I think in the same conference as Niagara. (I gotta check things.)
