Soccer (football) is popular in just about every country in the world, while basketball is limited to a much smaller list of countries. Therefore, a soccer start like Ronaldo or Messi would be more known than a basketball star like Jordan or James.

I think it mostly depends where you ask this question. In america I would guess Michael Jordan. In a lot of other places Christiano Ronaldo (Not sure about asia.) In Europe I am sure its Christiano Ronaldo.

It depends who you ask or which genreation you ask, when Ronaldo came through Michael had long since retired. Both are pretty well known.
