Would boxer briefs be the best for playing men's volleyball or what would you recommend?

Anything that keeps things in place would be ideal. You're going to be moving around quite a bit so briefs, boxer briefs, thongs would all be good choices. The latter two will provide a bit of extra support but you may not be comfortable wearing those styles (or changing into them in front of other players).

With boxer briefs you'd want something better than generic cotton. You'll want sturdier material.

I'd suggest the American Eagle Flex line, they're pretty much the best for their price.

Otherwise the Neleus Pro compression shorts on Amazon work just as good as Nike and UA but are leagues cheaper.
