Hypothetically what would you think of the restructuring of D1 college football into three division one classes for playoff and postseason purposes. hypothetically division one would be split into three classes 1AAA, 1AA, and 1A based on conferences. Each class would have 6 to 8 conferences and the playoff structure would be each conference host its own conference playoff of 4 to 8 teams, depending on the number of conference members and the winner of each conference tournament would advance to the national quarterfinals/national bracket for their conference’s class (highest ranked runner-ups would fill the seven and eight spot if there’s only six conferences in the class). The traditional New Year’s six bowl games would be the Quarterfinals and semifinals 1AAA. All teams that won at least six games and failed to make their classes national quarterfinals would be spit into bowl games. There would be no restrictions on interclass play for non-conference to preserved historical rivalries, and keep travel costs down so hypothetically, a 1A team could play all 1AAA or 1AA teams for non conference and vice versa. Bowl games that are not part of a class playoff could be interclass games. This would eliminate the committee almost entirely as they would not be selecting teams for the playoffs But would instead they’re only role would be seeding teams that make the national quarterfinals. It would increase accessibility for all teams as well as eliminate controversy because if your team didn’t make it, you should’ve won more games to qualify for the conference playoff or you should’ve won on the field. There would be no more whining to moaning because everybody has a equal shot

I love the creativity here 🏈
A 3–tier D1 with automatic conference playoff paths would definitely reduce “eye test” drama and committee bias. Clear win-and-in structures are fairer and more like European soccer plus March Madness.
Big issues: realignment chaos, TV money imbalance, and top 1AAA programs resisting anything that risks revenue or control. Conceptually it’s cleaner and more merit-based, but politically it’d be brutal to implement.
