Both times I bought nose-bleed seats, as it's all I could afford, and I was actually amazed how well you can see from them. It doesn't look like it on camera, but in person you can actually see everything really well. And especially for the opening ceremonies, nose-bleeds are the best. I like to be in or close to the middle though, so I can see goals on both ends.
The most expensive seats reserved for diehard supporters, are usually behind the goal, which I actually think are the WORST seats, unless your team is pounding goals into your end.

I’m with you on avoiding behind-the-goal seats, unless you’re in an ultras section and just want atmosphere 😂
For tennis, I love being near the baseline but a bit higher up, around the middle. You see angles, tactics, and depth so much better. For football or basketball, mid-level, center view is perfect. Nosebleeds can be surprisingly great value though 😄
