Why does everyone seem to hate Lionel Messi so much?

Messi is an outstanding soccer player. Most of the 'hatred' is purely sports rivalry.

However, there are some bad stereotypes about Argentine soccer fans (and people in general), related to racism and arrogance — this is probably a reason too.

Messi, Ronaldo (CR7), Neymar, etc. — there are several really older great soccer players still active, and they inspire all kinds of passions!

I have a personal rule regarding sports and all public careers: separate the person (their private life, etc.) from the professional (and their work).

Many of his haters are just Ronaldo fans, or they have a bias for another footballer and are jealous that Messi is widely regarded as the best footballer of all time. Some people just can’t stand greatness, and some of it is just cancel culture. He’s not perfect by any means, you can’t expect any person to be, but he’s definitely a legend and has a lot of heart.

I barely know who he is. I have heard of him and did watch him during the world cup. He is pretty amazing, so I don't know why anyone would hate him. I learned during the tournament that he was quite old for a soccer player but still amazing.

I generally don't hate people that I don't know. Good for him for a good world cup.

Probably because like a lot of athletes who become superstars overnight, it goes to their heads. They get big egos and think they own the world.

I know I for one am getting quite tired of famous people and millionaires. They really offer no significant value to the world, even if they want to donate money and whatnot. They are more often useless idols who people put too much of their praise and focus on.
