Did Americans watch the 49ers vs Rams game at the MCG, and what did they think?

It seemed a bit one sided but it was the first NFL game I have watched so don't have much to base my impressions on.

So I'd like to know what Americans thought of the game quality.

Think the RAMS made a poor decision in leaving the US on Tuesday Sept 8th evening and arriving in Melbourne at 7 am on Thursday Sept 10th then at the kickoff 26 hours later.

Do ya reckon they didn't play as well as they could have because they were jet lagged?

The 49ers got in a week earlier so they could established themselves as the crowd favorites. Very enjoyable with 100,021 at the G and an as yet unknown number watching the live broadcast of TV like myself. All on a working day as well.

I watched every minute of the game and thought it was a well fought game. Only issue I had was with the sound as it kept going in and out. Don't know it that was my TV or the network connection.

Thanks for that. A lot of sport is pretty much winner take all and just being slightly quicker and more on it means a big disparity in scores. Being the first game I have watched, I don't have any judgement - so I appreciate that feedback.

On my end the sound was pretty much OK but a few times the level dropped down. Dunno why.

@Sevenpointfive Not tested properly? They should cut over gradually. Google is really good at that. They cut over a small percentage of users to new versions so they fuck everybody up at once.

Most fans here saw it as a fun exhibition, not high-end NFL quality. It did feel one-sided and a bit sloppy at times.

Your jet lag point is valid. Leaving that late absolutely can hurt reaction time, focus, and physical sharpness. The Niners arriving earlier likely helped their rhythm and energy.

Overall, people enjoyed the spectacle and the crowd more than the actual level of play.

But you’re right that’s the reason the Rams lost the game. They are favored to win the Super Bowl this year to be world champions. The Super Bowl is being played in their home stadium.

It had to have affected the Rams I would have thought.

When I traveled to North America I arrived slightly before I left. That was OK. On the way back it mucked me up for a few days. I left in -20 C and I walked off in a heavy -20 coat into +40 C day and didn't notice till my girlfriend asked why I was doing that. :)

Is the Superbowl rotated through the home stadiums? Our Grand Final is always played at the MCG.

Ah. In other leagues here the grand final is played at the home ground of the team that finishes top of the ordinary home and away games but as your season is just starting that couldn't have been but I hadn't paused for thought.

For us it is the Spring Carnival when we all go sports mad for a while. The NFL game was a valuable addition to the spring sports. Hopefully it becomes part of the calendar.

The enthusiasm, and the respectfulness the Australian people showed at that game made it a great game and lets home one returns to Australia next season as well. If I was on a team chosen to go somewhere like your country to play I would want to get there a week ahead of time to see sights I might never get the chance again to see.

@katiesmuff Everybody had a lot of fun and we liked the 49ers because they dropped into our vibe. There wasn't much blue in the stands.

The MCG is our hallowed turf. The first Test cricket match of Australia vs England was there and in my view was were we won independence from England :). We just love new big events and new firsts at the G.

Plus this is the time of our big sporting events. To go, we have Aussie rules preliminary finals and then the Grand Final at the end of September. After that it is onto the horse races with the big one - Melbourne Cup - usually happening when you are voting in your elections by coincidence.

A big NFL game just slotted into the carnival perfectly. We get public holidays for our Grand Final and the Melbourne Cup, so Melbourne decided the NFL game was an unofficial public holiday and took a long weekend.

We have a grand final parade and next time there should be a NFL parade too I think.
