Why do NFL teams call low-percentage deep shots on 3rd and short?

It makes no sense. If you just get the third down with a high percentage play, you get a fresh set of downs anyway. throwing a deep ball is almost never the right thing to do, unless someone gets like 10 yards wide open.

Defenses usually sell out to stop the short yardage, loading the box and playing tight, which creates favorable matchups for deep routes. If it hits, you get a chunk play or touchdown. If it fails, you often punt in roughly the same situation you’d face on 4th anyway.
