I have the Lenovo chrombook which has a max resolution of 4096x2304. I want to hook it up to a wide 49inch monitor with a resolution of 5120x1440. Is this doable? Will it just have black bars on the side of the screen? Or will it not display anything at all? Currently I have it hooked up to a ‎3440x1440 and it is fine but I need a wider monitor.

Yes totally doable, you can adjust the settings for first and second monitor seperately.

First Monitor would be the built in from the chromebook and second the widescreen one you plug in via HDMI.

You just need to avoid the 1:1 Mirror setting, if you do this the second monitor will adjust to the aspect ratio of the first one and you get the black lines.

And you may experience some slow downs when doing visually impressive stuff, as the gpu struggles to render two images at the same time.

Just remember that TV's don't have as high a refresh rate as computer screens or monitors.
