I think excessive wear and tear is about it. I'd check the belts to start out with. See if there is issues like weather or conditions getting to it.

I own a cop car and the alternator is a beast. Start with looking at the belts attached to it and go from there.

  • What causes alternator to fail?

There are a few different things that can cause an alternator to fail:

    • One of the most common causes is a bad voltage regulator. This can cause the alternator to put out too much or too little voltage, which can damage the electrical system in your car.
    • Another common cause is a bad diode. This can cause the alternator to not charge the battery properly, which can lead to a dead battery.
    • Finally, a bad bearing can cause the alternator to fail. This can cause the alternator to make a lot of noise, and it can also damage the electrical system in your car.

    Signs of a Failing Alternator

You may not know it, but your alternator is essential to your car’s electrical system. It’s what charges your battery and provides power to your lights, radio, and other electrical accessories while your car is running. A failing alternator can cause all sorts of problems, from a dead battery to dim lights and everything in between.

Here are some signs that your alternator may be failing:

    1. Dead Battery

One of the most common signs of a failing alternator is a dead battery. If your alternator is not charging your battery, it will eventually run out of power and die. This can happen even if you’re not using any electrical accessories.

    2. Dim Lights

If your alternator is failing, it may not be able to provide enough power to your lights. This can cause them to dim or flicker when you turn them on.

    3. Strange Sounds

A failing alternator can make some strange sounds. You may hear whining, grinding, or clicking noises coming from under the hood.

    4. Burning Smell

If you smell something burning under the hood, it could be your alternator. A failing alternator can overheat and start a fire.

    5. Car Won’t Start

If your car won’t start, it could be because the alternator is not providing enough power to the starter. This is usually accompanied by other symptoms, such as dim lights or strange sounds.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to have your alternator checked out as soon as possible. A failing alternator can cause serious problems, and it’s not something you want to ignore.

How long do alternators usually last?

The average lifespan of an alternator is usually around 6 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. However, this is just a general guideline and there are a number of factors that can affect how long your particular alternator will last. For example, the quality of the alternator and the way it is maintained can play a big role in its longevity.

That being said, if you take good care of your alternator and regularly have it serviced, it can last much longer than 6 years. In fact, it’s not uncommon for alternators to last 10 years or more.

So, if you want your alternator to last as long as possible, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for service and maintenance.

The alternator on my ‘88 Pathfinder went out after 20 years and 190,000 miles.

Brushes in the alternator will wear out over time. Nothing you can do about that. Diodes fail. Just everyday wear and tear over time causes them to fail.

Water exposure, it's a cheap fix I can recall my dad replacing one of his car for about £80, half for a salvaged part and half for 15 minutes labour
