What do you think of the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid?

I test-drove a 2018 today with 60 something thousand miles. Internet price is 22,700. Drives totally fine, mine had no accidents with one owner. It was a trade-in.

Nice backup cameras, touchscreen. It's Honda's biggest sedan though the backseat is not quite as roomy as one in an Accords.

Gas mileage ranges, but it you get at least 40mpg and up to 100mpg or more.

My dad is jealous and he wants it for himself for the gas savings alone. But it drives nice too. Do you think I should try to get it?

I think its a bad idea.

Batteries do not hold their charge over time, each time you use it the capacity reduces so while it maybe fine now it isn't going to be all that long until the battery runs out very quickly and you are now carrying around all that dead weight for no reason.

Another extremely important consideration is that Americans pay literally fuck all for 'gas' so no you aren't saving a lot of money on fuel.

If you buy a car for $10,000 instead of $20,000 you get 2,831 gallons of 'free' fuel with it which is enough at 40mpg which is easily achievable in a modern non American car to do 113,240 miles.

Stop listening to sales pitches about fantasy world fuel consumption and do the numbers on the lifecycle of the vehicle.

I'm no expert on electric cars but I've been looking into going electric for the fuel savings for my business. Certain models (like the Nissan leaf) you can easily check the battery life before you buy the car. Which is relevant since electric car batteries need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years (and a new EV car battery can cost as much as 15,000). Your car is already 4 years old. Probably not too bad. But the age of the battery will affect the range of distance off a single charge over time.

I like the concept of hybrids more than pure electric for cars. Seems like a decent price too.

What I'd really like to see is a triple fuel option. Gas, hydrogen, or electric.

It's doable and hydrogen is going to be most cost effective in the future unless battery tech really makes quick progression.

They're decent. Plugin hybrids dont make sense unless they have the retentive brake feature. ID say a good gateway to a full electric.
