What exactly is Linux computer operating system good/useful for?

Linux is built on open source software which means that you have access to change pretty much anything you want about it. The operating system can do as much or as little as you want which means it can run on a potato or power the biggest super computers. And if you want to do either of those things, then you are most likely running linux. If you are a business and want a system that does anything specific like control a machine then you probably run linux. Most of the internet runs on linux.

While Windows dominates the desktop computer, Linux dominates pretty much everything else with over 97% in certain categories.

Nothing really. Linux users just like to think are special for using it. You really don't gain anything.

You gain a lot actually, full control over the system allows quite a bit of uses and tweaks that are not possible on windows or mac.

Its also not a single OS, its a bunch of them, all designed for different uses.
But all linux distros allow changing anything you want for any use you want.
