They check to see if the number is in use so they can put you on a scammer list.
This is why I never answer my phone or reject it mid call or respond to a text. The activity has greatly reduced because of this.
No, it’s because they are trying to make money and the people doing it get paid etc. being annoying is just a bonus lol

No they exist, to see of the number is legit, to try and extract personal information or to scam you.
How are they gonna do that if I never answer and they never leave a message?
Move on to the next person until they finally reach someone stupid enough to take the bait.
