Asking this because I actually want to go on one but I don’t know how this works.
Not as a passenger, but I used to work on them. Will depend on where you go as to what your options will be for excursions. Most places will have a standard sightseeing type tours, there may be some more strenuous trekking if the area is known for wildlife or forests or there may be tours for specific sights (Pearl Harbour in Hawaii for example).
The actual cruise ship itself, essentially a floating hotel at the smaller scale to full floating villages with some of the larger ships, depending on what package you get will determine any extras you get.
Can definitely say there are some great experiences to be had, just depends on what you want to go see, if it's nature and great views, I'd recommend Alaska, fewer stops usually but lots of wildlife trails, mountain hikes and usually a few Glacier stops along the way. For culture, Europe is a good shout, Mediterranean cruises tend to hit Spain, south of France, Italy, Sicily, Turkey and possibly beyond.
Fair warning though, it's an isolated environment, there's a reason the industry has been pretty devastated thanks to Covid, you might be sensible, but not everyone is. (worked through my fair share of Norovirus outbreaks, thankfully left long before Covid struck)
Several: the usual cruises around the Caribbean and Mexico, which or pretty standard for American tourists.
I've also done a Mediterranean cruise, a European river cruise, a transatlantic cruise, and the big daddy of them all, a four-week Asian cruise from Sydney to Hong Kong. I have South American and Antarctic cruises booked for next year.
Cruising is an easy and relaxed way to travel, but it is pricey. Even so, your room, transportation and meals are all included, and usually drinks, which means you don't need to plan much more the flying to the cruise port and them flying home. The ship takes care of everything else.
Shore excursions are a roll of the dice: some are great while others border on being rip offs. Understand exactly where you are going, what you will be doing, and what you (should be) seeing.
Yeah it was our class graduation trip, we went for 5 days, started from Hamburg/Germany, to Amsterdam, to London and back to Hamburg. It was exciting the first day but after that it got kinda boring, especially when we were on there for a whole day. The food was great, the service was great too and yeah it's a cool experience. Would I go again? Maybe but it's not a must
Advice? I wouldn't book the cheap rooms on the lowest level... I woke up feeling so damn sea sick and I didn't sleep for long and always like 6/7 am I would go on the highest deck and chill there and wait for everyone
I went to Greece and Alaska and Hawaii and the Bahamas on a cruise, the food was good on the first 3 cruises and the drinks were good on the 4th cruise. The Alaska cruise served healthy food but low quality while the Bahamas cruise had unpleasant food and the Greece cruise was amazing but did not include drinks unless you paid extra.

I went on a cruise to the Bahamas during college spring break once, and that was the only time. Many friends from our school went along with others so we met and partied quite a bit. It's just like a glorified hotel on the water, just have to wash up regularly because you're sharing things with a lot of people. Even if you take a dip on the pool deck, wash up after. Getting to port was the best part to be honest, and experiencing the attractions. So where you stop is a big factor, make it so it's places you want to see not so much for the price.
I figure if I do a cruise again it'd be a let down nowadays.
All the times norovirus and cruise ships make news headlines haven’t helped add to my interest. Caught that from taekwondo and was like having food poisoning for three weeks straight. (Thought this was worth sharing, its very common on cruise ships)
Yes 2 times in my life but it’s been 10 years since last time, hopefully I get to go again after all these problems with Covid. Usually need a passport with you if you are going anywhere out of country, prices are usually for 2 in a cabin but you won’t stay in there long, most people are out drinking, gambling or eating on cruises until you get to a stop and visit and do excursions
I have been on the carnival cruise. It was fun lots of things to do and people to meet. The food was really good and they had lots of events throughout the cruise. I would suggest booking at least a few excursions to enjoy the places you stop at. I visited islands of the Caribbean they were fun even without the excursions that's why only book a few maybe like 1 or 2 because they get expensive.
Yes. Several times, long before Covid. We experienced cruising along/around the California coast, Mexican Riviera, Hawaiian islands, Caribbean, Mississippi River paddle boat, European river cruises, Mediterranean, Philippine islands. They were all absolutely fun. I wish we can do those again. However, I wouldn't wanna board a ship full of strangers nowadays. Good thing we own our own boat.
It was a beautiful experience. Everyone was so friendly and happy. It was all you can eat food and it had exercise equipment so no one gained weight. I wanted to spend the rest of my life here. Then I woke up.
It was still really fun. Id go on a cruise again. Thought about doing a Disney cruise this spring but my doctor said it’s not a good idea since I’m pregnant and covid.
I've been on 4 cruises. The pros: 1) get to visit multiple locations 2) food can be good 3) party atmosphere 4) great for groups of friends 5) lots to do - like a daycamp for adults
The cons: 1) they nickel & dime you on everything 2) No cheaper than flying/staying somewhere 3) boats are crowded (pools/hottubs especially) 4) You're on a "schdedule". If the boat leaves at 4 you'd better be on it.
I was on a day cruise to Bremuda from fort lauderdale. It had gambling, restaùrants, dancing, and entertaining shows. I got a room for some reason. It was a nice stateroom. The entertainment was better than anything else.

Paying thousands of dollars to be on a crowded floating petri dish with a few thousand people, is not my idea of luxury. I've been on a cruise and NEVER AGAIN! It's even worse when you get into port. You don't get to "know" any of the islands, you just get shuttled to a beach or the common tourist sights. The whole experience sucks. If you want to learn about an island, pick one, go there, get to know the people.
@AndrésC64 That's not the case on every ship. Some cruises have open dining and tables are not assigned, but it's still a cluster fuck no matter what you try to do.
Went to Mexico, it was cool. Everyone is super lax cuz everyone knows they got at least a full week ahead of not working. It's a super chill environment.
I done last and been to the Caribbean, Central and South America the Batlic, Far East the Mediterranean, Iceland and the Norwegian. I really enjoyed all of them at the time and it was wonderful waking up in a different country most mornings. However I wouldn't recommend going on one now due to the current onboard protocols due to COVID-19. In fact I've just cancelled mine and swapped it for a land based holiday.
After titanic no, really that movie made me scare of cruise. But my mom and grandma been, they told me that was the best thing they have ever made! They told me, they didn’t feel like they are on the sea, they traveled few part of America.
Yes I have. It was a blast because it was with friends and family. Got sun poisoning from being out at the beach all day. I was young, I didn’t pay but I remember getting all the soda I wanted.
