The baches are mostly said, unless there is a river nearby, in which case the beach may have rocks. Millions of people come to Southern California to enjoy the warm sunny beaches, only to be surprised how cold the water is, especially when you are comparing the ocean temps on the East Coast at the same latitude.

SoCal ocean water temps peak at 20-21 degrees in the Summer, but the rest of the time the water is in August and September. The rest of the year water temps are around 10-15 degrees. Ocean temps are usually ten degrees warmer on the East Coast, and much warmed in the Gulf of Mexico or southern Florida. You might be roasting on the beaches in SoCal at 40 degrees, only to shiver when you go into the water. This is why CA surfers wear wetsuits year-round.

Besides being cold, visibility in the water off the coast of CA isn't good due to high amounts of seaweed and kelp- which is a type of brown seaweed which can grow to lengths of 30 to 80 meters. It is easy to get tangled up in that stuff. In addition, there are often riptides which can pull you out into deeper into the ocean, and let's not forget jellyfish. If you have ever been stung by one of those nasty critters, you will never forget it!

I have never swam in the Mediterranean. and yes it's hard to predict what the swimming place is like. varies by location

It's varies a lot from shallow sandy surf beaches, quiet coves, rocky deep water etc. The bottom can be silt, sand, pebble or rock. Your never more than a short drive from your preferred type. Some of the headlands are a bit dangerous for swimming and the tides to the south can be very strong with a range up to 10m, elsewhere they're only a few metres. Current temperature is around 14°C, max is about 16 and in March drops to about 8. Water clarity varies from crystal clear to chocolate brown according to weather.
There's not much that'll try and eat you close in shore, occasionally a shark will be spotted and last year one had a nibble on a kayak. Biggest danger would be from standing on a weaverfish or a man o war jellyfish

Favourite quiet swimming spot, deep but slack currents.

Typical sandy beach. Most get busy in summer but there's some quieter ones.
