Been giving it a lot of thought. Glad I don't have to. But if Florida ever became uninhabitable, and I lost everyone, my strategy is to flee to western North Carolina. If all cars are dead, and all I have is a bike, I'd load up whatever I could. It would be a perilous journey, but I'd do it.

Should probably visit the area, just to know what to expect.

The pilgrimage would first require me to go east. I-75 would be a terrible place to go north. Better to stay near the coast. Start by heading to Daytona. Then, I'd make my way to Savannah, then Charleston. Then, toward Wilmington. After getting established in Wilmington, I could begin my journey westward, toward Asheville.

Weather would be cooler in the winter, but not unbearably.

Get established, find a homeless shelter, find safe areas for pitching a tent. Find work. Find truck stops for showering. Find soup kitchens. Use money from work to get a place with very low rent. Even a ratty shed is better than the tent. Move up in rank gradually as I can afford more and better. Eventually, upgrade to a proper small home. 2-bedroom, 1-bath. Get a car. Could be a junker, as I'd not have many places to go. Get regular WiFi at the house. Resume old operations. Get some works published. If any of it should ever somehow sell stupidly well, like Rick Riordan well, upgrade the car and house and equipment. Pay off any remaining debts.

Finding a wife might help, but that's not likely.

Granted, I'd have to sell or toss a lot of my current life in Florida. Would hurt me to part with it.

To escape extreme unpleasantness or to find economic opportunity, I could live anywhere. All I need is a quiet affordable, place to sleep, eat, cook, stay clean, parks to enjoy nature, sidewalks to go for walks, internet for phone, entertainment and work, and mail delivery nearby.

What I won't do is move to a place where the cost of rents for a one bedroom apartment exceeds 30% of my gross income. So, that rules out a large swaths of the United States that I will NOT move to. No to San Diego, No to LA, no to SF, no to Portland, No to Seattle, No to Boston, No to NYC, no to Philadelphia/Baltimore/Washington DC, No to Miami, No to Austin

I envy you GAG folks who live in Eastern Europe where you have everything we have in the United States but also get low cost of housing and free or low cost medical care and free university. The United States is NOT the greatest country in the world. I don't know why so many Chinese, Russians and Indians clamor to get H1 visas to move here and live 8 guys to a bedroom and eat raman for breakfast lunch and dinner. They all think they will have stock options that make them into billionaires. It rarely happens.

Depends on your personality. If you make friends easily, can be fun. You also need to have a lot of money to start over.
If you are sad and heartbroken thinking leaving will help you become happier… may not be the right approach.

I could have done that, but I didn't do it...

it was just not the path for me, at the moment... I had the option to leave somewhere else and be on my own, see for myself, make things easier for me in many and most ways, but I decided to stay because it was needed, even if that was more difficult

technically, I did move to another state, but within borders... lol

I did move to other cities that were 2, 3, 4 hours away... and for dynamic of the region that is not FAR away, so although I moved to be on my own and I never really very far away from my people... is not like I want from one coast to another, or from one border to the other

I did that! 30 years ago, I was 29 and moved to Los Angeles, California from New York. I did have some family... My one cousin 5 years older than me who was like a big brother to me moved to southern California from New York in the early 1980s. He lived an hour away, so he helped me make the transition. I also had 3 native Californian cousins who lived 400 miles north in Sacramento.

Would I do it again?
Yes. In fact, in a way, I've done it a few times because I am a contractor who has to travel and live in various places for weeks or even years at a time visiting home only a few times a year.

Yes! Have done it several times. Don't like family being too close. I have even moved country to get away from the 'family dynamic'.

The idea of being reliant on family/friends fills me with dread as does them just turning up unannounced.

I currently live far enough away from family and close friends so that they don't visit very often lol

Even in my current line of work, there is no need for that. But let's give it a thought anyway. If the new place truly has more to offer than where I'm currently living and would compensate for the distance of friends and family, I see not why. I know that my family would always support the idea if it truly is beneficiary. After all what matters to them is what is in my best interest. Other than that, I'm content in staying what's more familiar and having my loved ones close to me.

I'm currently considering doing that next year or the following year. It would be better to have a girlfriend to move with, but I won't accept someone I wouldn't be happy with just to have someone with me.

Once I got my teaching degree, it opened up a lot of possibilities for me if I want to leave liberal California.

The thought has crossed my mind before, but I love my home too much. I am finally in my dream career field. Also, I have family members who will be passing away soon (not anything terminal but they are old with health issues) so I need to be near. If something happens to take me away from my current career and these family members have already passed away, then I would likely move to a new place for a fresh start and to travel more.

Then again I moved to Texas in 2012 based on a LDR from which I came back to my home state again 3 years later. I already have. When I was 21, I moved to another part of the state (big state), and left my family and old way of life behind. I was never real close with my family, and had few friends anyway. Life was much better for me where I am now.

Yes, in fact I did. I moved out of California to another state for school and stayed there for a job after graduation. I also moved to get away from the increasingly absurd political and regulatory environment in California.
