When you think of a 'big city' which city comes to your mind first?

As an American NYC is the first thing I think of. But if I think of REALLY big cities, it would not be in the US. Tokyo is the biggest. I think Osaka in Japan is also in the top ten, maybe top five. Shanghai and Beijing in China are also way up there.

If I ignored the total population, and look at big city features like densely populated and skyscrapers, I'd think of someplace like Hong Kong.

At one time in my life Mexico City was the biggest, but it's dropped compared to some other cities. I think it might have been biggest when they had the Olympics there. (and very high in elevation so the athletes couldn't breath)

Probably LA or SF just because those are the biggest I have been to.

Paris is my No. 1 big city. New York 2, San Francisco 3, Chicago 4 and thought New Orleans isn't big, it's my hometown and since it's a port city and a tourist mecca, it has big city status. I could make it No. 1 and move all the rest down a peg, but I think that'd be cheating.

Other than my hometown, these are my favorite big cities which I've been to or lived near. I can't rate the others because I have no experience of them.

@Bricealan And just think, your French would get to be pristine!!! And from Paris you could visit everywhere in Europe and N. Africa. It's a great jumping off point.

@Screenwriter When I was there, I wanted to see the beach at Normandy, but planned too late, and found it was a 'day trip' I did see a lot, and bought at BEAUTIFUL oil near the Sacred Heart Cathedral. 1800 Euros, and I never regretted a penny of it

@Bricealan I was SOOooooo stupid when I was there and was penny pinching because it was my first Euro trip and I was terrified I wouldn't have enough money for us to get stuff and get back home. Came home with $200 that I should've spent on souvenirs. This was 30+ years ago and I missed some great objects. Have wonderful photos and a friend who lives outside Paris who allowed us to stay at his apartment in the 11th arrondisment. It was a hop and skip to anywhere. We were only there 10 days and it was as if we had a JOB! Up at 9 out by 10, on the streets/buses/metro until 10 pm every night! We both got colds we were working so hard. It is a GIANT city! You have no idea until you're there. We didn't even GET to Pere LaChaise or the hilltop cathedral. We were concentrated in the Old City center. Did get to Georges Pompidou. But you know what we enjoyed the most! The Picasso Museum. Had no idea the scope of that man's talent. He did every kind of art there is! No wonder he was such an asshole!!! ahahahahahaha! The Louvre was closed and thank god for that. It allowed us to see so many other museums like D'Orsay.

The Louvre probably takes three or four days to see and I think that's too much for one place. Not interested in seeing the tiny little crowded Mona Lisa. I also think riding the buses that have sky-view tops was one of the cheapest tours of the city you could take. I had old Michelin guides that were wonderful. Don't even know if they make them anymore, but they were perfect for sights.

Didn't get to the catacombs either... You see? Missed so much, but saw so much. It is THEE city. Now, I've not been to Istanbul (or Constantinople) Tokyo or Singapore, so they might give it a run for the money. But I love museums and I've not heard that any of those cities are known for that.. Kisses!!

@Screenwriter Appreciated the detail of your trips to Paris. I climbed the stairs in the Arch of Triumph at midnight... and got to the top and took video and photos of the Eiffel Towel.

Went to the top of the Eiffel, tower and it was spectacular view of all of Paris...

It sounds like you saw great deal of Paris and the museums Did you ride the Metro? Did you go up the Eiffel Tower to the top? I toured Napoleons Museum and did go too the Louvre. . I traveled with a couple, that I met there..(wonderful man and wife) but he had COPD and had a hard time walking in the Louvre up and down stairs, but we did see the Mona Lisa. You are correct, you could spend days in the Louvre...

You sound like a wonderful person, and I enjoy our communication.

@Bricealan Oh, I've only had a stopover in London on the way to Paris and 10 days in Paris. My next goal is diving the Great Barrier Reef off coast of Australia. That and to see some of Africa: Senegal, Nigeria, Egypt, Marrakesh. I wouldn't mind seeing a few more places, but I haven't even seen all of the U. S. Some whales in Alaska. Some ruins in Peru and the Yucatan. I don't know how people smash it all in! There's so much to see!

I live near San Francisco and San Jose which are comparably smaller than either Los Angeles or New York City but, since they're the ones closest to my residence, they're both the first ones that came to mind.
