It all depends if you are traveling alone or in a group.

Personally, I don't like traveling alone. I posted a reply on that topic a few minutes ago.

The problem for a single woman traveling alone is that she cannot feel safe anymore. It is actually sad but that is unfortunately how it is.

If you travel in a group, I think you should not have too many issues contacting others. Depending on where you go and what language is spoken, I would recommend that you learn a few basic words. When others realize that you make an effort speaking their language, they open to you much quicker. At least it is the experience I have made, mainly when your travels take you to Europe or Asia.

Don't be shy to go towards them and have a smile on your face. When you introduce yourself to them, don't automatically shake hands. Some cultures are not so open with strangers. But a smile is never wrong and also, make extensive use of hand language.

First, make couple jokes and check kind of personality of person. If he is very serios etc, talk mostly real fact of life, if not, mostly talk pass and future recommendation ideas.
Result will be one of the other.
