I found it very hectic and disorganized. There seems to be no system or order to anything and Italians never take any accountability. It's always someone else's fault.

Venice was truly impressive even in bad weather and I also found it to be the most relaxing and pleasant and also friendliest and best food options. Highly recommend. Pisa and Pompeii were also nice. In Pisa it's worth venturing beyond just the Square of Miracles and is really worth at least a day trip. Tivoli is a great alternative to the more popular hilltowns. Incredibly underrated and needs more than a day trip. Though the food was a joke.

Positiano is overrated. It looks beautiful from a distance, but once you get inside the town it's so crowded and the beaches are ugly and gravely. People inside the tourist area are friendly, but in the area above the town they're assholes.

Then there was Rome. Rome was never on my wish list, but as it had the cheapest and best connections and was also well connected with trains, we decided to stay here. Dirt, grafittee, trash, racist stupid Africans. And the people there are just awful! I've never met so many liars, robbers and con artists in one place. I swear there isn't one honest person in that city. We traveled by metro and it was so crowded and exhausting. Food is mediocre and attractions are expensive and have so many lines. We didn't go into any of the major sites, though I did find some very beautiful ruins for only 8 Euros that are almost completely unknown to tourists. Don't get me wrong, the sites are incredible, but the other factors completely ruin it. I honestly would not recommend it to anyone. It's nothing like the movies and travel shows make it out to be. The Colleseum was honestly a bit underwhelming.
One thing I will say though, maybe not so much in Rome, but in other cities, the customer service seemed better and friendlier than in most places in Europe.

The problem with Italy is if you're going there for the first time, you feel obligated to see the iconic sites. It's definitely better to stick to the smaller towns/villages. Though Venice is a good base, though you can see all the main sites within 4 hours. We had one and a half days in Venice and ended up doing a last minute cruise to the islands. It all looks the same after a while and there's only so much walking you can do. But as a base, it would be good. I almost skipped it but I'm glad I didn't.
The only thing I regret is not visiting the Alps. If I ever do go back, I will visit a less touristy region like Puglia
