I need some help and advice on buying car insurance?

Does anyone In NY state know if you absolutely need car insurance and plates when you have just brought a car to get it home?

I asked a similar question somewhere else and it’s like the world was ending. I’m basically trying to buy a used car on Facebook marketplace or wherever and I realized ima need plates to get the car home but in every situation to get plates or get the car home I need car insurance.

Someone did tell me that in most situations like this even if you get pulled over police’s officers will understand that you just brought the car and shouldn’t give you a hard time I also saw that some states give you a grace period to get the car insured.

I was thinking of getting some rental car insurance since it’s short term policy but not sure if it would apply to something like this. Cause basic 6 month policy especially for me to open one for the first time is to expensive plus I wanted to get the car and shop around for the best policy.

What should I do and how should I go about this do I just pull the trigger and get a 6 month policy first or try getting rental insurance or just drive the car home without either plates or insurance I don’t plan on going super fat to get a car anyway and I’m pretty safe driver never been in an accident before but I do understand the risk.

New York does require at least a temporary plate, and insurance, to drive a vehicle, yes.

Assuming you're buying the vehicle from a private seller in NY state, and remaining in NY state, you can apply for a temporary intrastate permit from the DMV. That will allow you to legal drive the vehicle for 30 days before getting it registered.

The insurance is a little trickier, since, as you said, it's expensive to get a six month policy. There are some insurance companies that will allow you to pay month to month (State Farm is one), which you may want to look into. Something like that may be your best bet, so that you can legally drive the car while shopping around for better insurance.

Thank you for the help this was exactly what I needed at the very least for one month I’ll have insurance and will be able to buy a car within that time and drive it while I look for the best possible policy and get everything situated

If you bought it from a dealer they usually give you a temporary registration that is usually 72 hours valid. Most states will allow that even if you bought from another individual. You'll need to look up NY state law to be sure

There is NO state that offers a grace period on insurance. What if you kill someone or cripple them for life while you don't have insurance? Who is going to pay for that? That's a felony and could land you in prison for life.
