Does anybody drive with both feet in an automatic car?

Girls and guys, not sure if this is popular elsewhere in the world but in bigger cities like LA and NY a lot of my friends tell me it’s quite common due to all the traffic. I’ve been driving like this for almost 4 years now and it feels like second nature. Haven’t had a problem going back to a stick, but I feel more comfortable and safer using both feet in an auto. Any others do the same?

My ex-wife used to drive with both feet, left foot on the brake and right foot on the accelerator (aka gas pedal). It drove me nuts riding with her.

Experts point out that's actually dangerous to drive with both feet. In an emergency, where you have to stop quickly, you might press both teh break and accelerator. It's much better, and safer, to remove your right foot from the accelerator and move it over to the brake pedal.

Racecar drivers do use both feet because it helps them get around corners quicker. But we're not racecar drivers. 😎

Of course, in a manual transmission, it's required to drive with both feet, left on teh clutch and right on the brake and accelerator.

I voted sometimes. There is infact a really good reason to do so depending on what car you drive.

If your car has an Open-Differential and is struggling to get going on less than ideal surfaces, it may send all the torque to a tire that has no grip. Pressing on the brake while hitting the gas will fix this.

For AWD this is less of a problem since most of them have Computer Controlled Differentials. But guess how most Computer Controlled Differentials actually control torque, yes that's correct, with the breaks lol.

By default, only with my right foot in a vehicle with an automatic transmission.

When being followed too closely, to signal the driver behind me to back off, I'd press lightly on the brake pedal with my left foot while still pressing on the accelerator with my right.

I only use one foot. When I was learning how to drive UI was told that if you drive with both feet if you have an emergency you will automatically hit both the gas and brake pedals.

This is standard technique in single-gear go-karts and in high performance driving with paddle shifting. With a manual transmission it's trickier but still useful in a corner when no downshift is needed. I used to do it on the road in my BMW 328 to practice for the track.

No, the 2 foot thing is dangerous as hell in an emergency situation. I've found the latest generation of intelligent cruise control the best solution for the heavy traffic in the NY Metro area. My cars will brake down to zero and resume with a tap of the gas pedal or a button push on the "set" button on the steering well.

Left foot braking is slightly faster in an emergency for a practiced driver.

To your second point, I have adaptive cruise control in my Honda SUV and just love it. I live in Seattle and traffic on I-5 is often slow heading south toward home. This used to be tiring, now it's relaxing. I just put on the cruise and all I have to do is steer a little bit to stay in my lane, and press resume if I'm stopped for 30 seconds or so. I just chill out to some music and don't care if it takes an hour to get home.

I think that's risking too much. The ONLY reason to drive with both feet is when you have a good old fashioned manual, with a Clutch Pedal, transmission. Otherwise, keep the left foot at rest and the right foot shifting between gas and brake pedals.

I learned to drive in vechiles with manual gear boxes so I use both feet.

Actually had my father in law have to show me how to drive his old truck as the gears were on the steering wheel.

I drove standard transmissions exclusively for years as well as being taught by my brother in law that one foot was the way. Using two would feel extremely awkward at this point.
