He’s a dumb as shit kid who never should have been there. He wasn’t old enough to be in possession of the rifle. He had no training or experience to handle the situation he put himself in (a situation trained law enforcement couldn’t control) and quickly got in over his head and panicked. He might skate on the homicide charges but the fact remains that none of it would have happened had he not been there. He was a wanna be cop who thought he would be a hero and probably had his head full of right wing rhetoric. Although I’m sure he is scared and upset and the tears might be real, I don’t really have a lot of sympathy for him. A reasonable person would know traveling to an area of civil unrest with a weapon you aren’t really competent with is a recipe for something bad to happen. Now he’ll have to live with the decision he made.

@grega239 You just proved my point. You can’t just shoot someone for being a criminal. It’s not a legal justification for deadly force. That is criminal action in and of itself and it happens disproportionately to people of color.
Recounting something like that would probably have me in tears as well. Just because you don't like him, that doesn't mean you should be making fun of this. It's pretty heartless, to be honest.

My only real concern is about the precedent the ruling can set for people's ability to defend themselves. I don't want people to be afraid to proactively use violence to defend themselves from people who are attacking them violently; especially not in places where the cops aren't able to respond. There's gotta be a balance between vigilantism and self defense.

The reason I didn't do that is because the 90s aren't what we compare year-by-year murder rates aren't going to tell us if recent changes in policy are having a negative impact. It's true that the murder rate has dropped since the 90s. It's also true that it has gone up since it's lowest level. Both of those things can be true at the same time.
Biden's infrastructure plan doesn't really do much of that though... it's a lot more affirmative action than community development.
The biggest way to beat crime is to invest in those communities. And the way you do that is with law enforcement making investors more comfortable with pouring money in. One of the things Trump did that I agreed with was investing into the inner cities and impoverished communities. Who was killed by someone who didn't know anything about him. I could feel sympathy for a family member, but the asshole didn't know who he was killing, not one out of the three.
