Statue of Native American ballerina destroyed and sold to recycling center?

Thieves destroyed a statue of a Native American ballerina and sold the broken parts to a recycling center in Oklahoma for about $250. The thieves chopped the statue of Marjorie Tallchief into pieces, prompting outcry among residents in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tallchief was an American ballerina, primarily in the 1940s and 50s, and a member of the Osage Nation.

Tallchief’s statue is one of the museum’s “Five Moons” – bronze statues of five of Oklahoma’s renowned Native American ballerinas that include Yvonne Chouteau, Rosella Hightower, Moscelyne Larkin and Maria Tallchief.

What do you think of this? Simple vandalism or something else?

Sounds too much work to be simple vandalism and not worth doing for such a small amount. My hunch is it's politically motivated by someone who thinks ballet is a white thing and an Indian doing it is cultural appropriation.

It could well have been a political statement, that is of course if we are assuming the thieves had sufficient intelligence to actually know what they were cutting down.
