The u. s. senate has 100. We know independent was at least 4, because 4 of the 34 in this recent past election were independent.

If so why do websites say democrats had 50 senate seats?

100-4=96 if republican had 49 and independent at least 4! That leaves only 47 for democrats?

The reason is that some of the "independents" regularly and consistently voted with the Dems, so despite their "independent" label, they were effectively Dems when it comes to Senate votes.
