This song is about New York City. It was written in the 70s but it is very appropriate given the current state of the city.

I feel bad for the people that grew up there and lived there for decades. They will be forced to make a choice pretty soon that they will not want to make.

Boca Raton Florida has a website dedicated to people from NYC who want to leave. They even have an electronic billboard in times square. Real estate agents are reporting lots of activity with people wanting to sell their NYC homes and move, Florida being the number one place.

This song came out in 1972 during the Lindsay administration. During his tenure there was a big exodus to the suburbs leaving only the people who could not afford to flee. It left a permanent underclass. I am not sure if this was a coincidence but in 1971 John Lindsay switched parties from Republican to Democrat.
Today we see record numbers of people putting their homes on the market or making offers on homes in New Jersey and Westchester County. This phenomenon and the businesses that have already moved or are planning on moving will cause and economic upheaval. The withholding of federal funds to so called sanctuary cities will exacerbate the condition. I imagine NY city will eventually declare bankruptcy like Detroit did. The difference will be the magnitude of this and the effect on the country.
