What should the federal minimum wage be?

The federal minimum wage is currently $7.50 an hour and in most places in the US even and entry level job at a fast food place will start people of at more than that. When Chik-Fil_E came to the town I live in they were offering $22/ hour to start.

Sen Chris murphy has filed legislation to raise it to $25/ hour.

On the flip side is the Supreme Court ruled that Obama's Temporary Protection Status is exactly that, it is temporary and the President can end it at any time. There are over a half a million people that have been here for years that will soon be sent back to wherever they came from. There are industries such as healthcare and construction that have employed these people for much less money than they would have to pay an American.. The owners of these businesses are complaining that the additional labor costs will be a hardship for them.

The minimum wage should be above the poverty line. Also, the poverty line standards need to be addressed. At present $16k is the line. This suggests that an individual earning $16,001 should be able to support themselves fully by working full time. I think most reasonable people will agree that is not possible in the USA. Not without government and/or charity assistance anyway. What’s insane is that twenty years ago the poverty line was $17.5k. Whoever decided it’s appropriate to lower the poverty line when inflation has consistently risen should be executed in a public square.

As @OlderAndWiser points out, the minimum wage was never intended to be something a person r family can live off of. It was intended to make sure company management paid their workers a reasonable wage, not forcing them to work long hours for pennies.

The goal of a minimum wage is to incentivize people to improve, be more productive and get raises as they move up the wage ladder. A high minimum wage just encourages people to do the absolute minimum amount of work, which is not good for business, the economy, or workers.

I would support a federal minimum wage of $10/hour, which would be reasonable for a base entry level job.

it is now $7.50. hour. nobody is paying that. Each state has it own minimum wage.

It’s $14 an hour in October it’s gonna be $15 an hour in Florida minimum wage. Unless the gas and food prices start dropping we need to increase the minimum wage because it’s becoming outrageous now and I’m going through money just for one man by myself double then what I had one year ago just on food alone

I did. My employer offered what I thought was a fair wage and I accepted their offer.

At least $10 . I want to go easy on small businesses , then I remember they are going under with Trump and his Tariffs.
