This is the woman who was the victim of a botched execution. She survived and is being treated in the hospital now. If she recovers, what should happen next?

Fuckin’ crazy, right? I know she did some fucked up shit back in the day, but I almost respect this, lmao. I’m pretty sure she’s going to have brain damage in reality, though, so I’d almost mercy-execute her at this point, if she’s in bad shape.

I’m sure they’ll just re-execute her because this is blood red Tennessee we’re taking about. But it’s also the Bible Belt, so who knows what wacky way they’ll go with it, lmao. They’ll decide God chose her to be a messenger to troubled youth or something, after denying that very offer of service in her clemency plea🙄

Regardless, they need to revisit this entire process, and really just the idea of having the death penalty in the first place. Executions don’t really serve any common purpose besides satisfying vengeance and bloodlust for surviving friends and family, and whatever portion of society at large points and wags their finger at the killer. I feel like the accountability happens with the incarceration.

I get Colleen Slemmer’s mom wanting to watch this chick die. I just don’t think it’s necessarily good for her, to give in to that urge. The outcomes for her life and her daughter’s don’t change. So it’s functionally purposeless.

And I’m not a huge believer in the deterrence factor of even imprisonment, let alone execution. You either have it in you to kill and you were driven to do it for whatever reason, or you don’t and you didn’t. I think if we could measurably quantify a murderer’s pre-murder likelihood of strong consideration of consequences before acting, I feel fairly confident that we might find that they would score lower than the people who had it in them and had the reason, but ultimately didn’t do it.

In simpler terms, I think there’s a certain percentage of the population who might find themselves in a desperate, high-pressure, or highly emotional situation and consider killing someone. I think most ultimately won’t, and maybe there’s a degree of honesty kept by this vague idea of legal repercussions. But I think the people we actually see on trial are just mentally “off” in some way. That could be your traditional idea of “crazy”; others I think are extreme narcissists. In both cases, I don’t see the law being as much of a deterrent: the crazy sociopath just plain old doesn’t give a fuck; and the narcissist is certain they’re clever enough to get away with it.

So Draconian penalties aren’t really going to do a lot, I don’t think. Every murderer you know and don’t know was aware that you’re not allowed to murder people, lmao. Beyond a case of overstepped “self-defense” or of pure delusion, every one of them knew it was wrong to do. And they all know murder comes with prison time if they catch you. I’m guessing almost all of the reasonably sane murderers just thought they could pull it off, and they fucked up somewhere along the way and got caught.

I don’t know, the whole death penalty thing just seems barbaric to me. It’s weird that a place like America has it. Well, maybe not that weird relative to who a lot of our people are, lmfao, but at least in terms of our general living conditions and advanced society. Seems unhealthy for our people too. Criminal schadenfreude has always really bothered me. It’s not even so much sympathy for the criminal as much as just a feeling of “shut the fuck up and channel all that admonishment into a mirror and get to improving yourself. Good for you for meeting the very low standard of not killing someone; now let’s work on all your other antisocial behaviors that won’t get you locked up but sure suck for the rest of us to live around.”, lmao.

Anyway, I was born a ramblin’ man, speaking of people needing to shut the fuck up, haha. So I’ll just wrap it up with: this feels like it should be a moment where we swing in response and make changes; but I feel like I’m done expecting “the right thing” to happen in America. They’ll pause the executions, Pike and the next guy who was on deck will get an extra year on their gravestones, but I’m sure they’ll just be like “we put our top scientists on it, and we’re gonna just give ‘em 10x!”🤦‍♂️
