My boyfriend says we may possibly break up but isn’t being direct?

We got into a argument over something dumb and he took space. He now says we may possibly break up but isn’t being direct. When I tried to make the decision for him and say yes he said that he just wanted to talk. I’m so confused and he won’t say anything else about it. I can’t tell if he wants to break up or not. What does this mean?
