Why did my ex tell his new girlfriend about me?

after we split up we rekindled and became friends. He never made a move, he’d just call and invite me over. He asked me if I was dating and I told him no. He never asked to date.
Now he’s dating someone else and he told me about her and told her about me. I believe he did that to put her at ease. He doesn’t reach out to me. Am I right?
I told him before he had a girlfriend that if he was to get someone else I’ll leave him alone and he said that they’re just going to have to understand we are friends and nothing more.
