Why has my ex returned the cat I got him?

My ex cheated while I was in rehab I found out and ended things. He wasn’t viewing my WhatsApp status but after we broke up he stared viewing it and then just two days after the break up this is the first time he has texted he texts at midnight claiming I should pick the cat and his mom doesn’t want it anymore and assured me that he really wants to keep it but his mom won’t let him. Honestly I feel like this is an excuse am I being delusional or. If not what could be the real reason he is returning the cat?

You really just have to ask him. Cats are 10+ year responsibility and what happens when /if he gets another girlfriend... he tells her that his X got him the cat. That's not going well.

Even if he loved (or particularly if he loved you) he won't want things around that remind him of you or the relationship. It's not because you're a bad person or anything like that it's that the end of a relationship is painful and reminders of that are unwelcome.

He wasn’t just my ex he was my best friend I really do love him I just couldn’t do with the lies he first asked my friend out when I was away I got to know then the next thing I find out about this girl I was hurt. I’m still hurt cause I thought we would be forever I have his things too I hid them of course so I’m not hurt but I can’t deny the fact that I love him.
