I haven't seen it. I don't plan to see it.
What is it about the film that couples argue about?
I've heard it is an all woman run society... wherever Barbie comes from. Ken is some useless moron who just rides the tail of her greatness. She comes to the real world where men hit on her and sexually assault her all the time (men are evil) and then Ken goes to Barbie land and the men take over until Barbie fixes everything and comes back and makes it a female Utopia again.
I saw some youtuber give a 5 minute recap of the film. I don't know if they described it accurately or not.
They did act as if all the men were evil or pathetic and useless and a girl run utopia is how life is best.
It sounds annoying and like it is propaganda to raise the next generation of little girls to be man hating, woman are perfect boss babes, down with patriarchy, women should run everything activists.
It is hard to visualize how a dating couple would break up over it. I'd be curious to hear what they are arguing about.
Without seeing it, I think it's difficult to have an objective opinion. Most people appear to just be influenced by what others think without having watched it.
some feminists are dumping their boyfriends over it if they don't agree with the movie's political message
I can see it causing break ups if one of the couple's members starts going on a rant about anti-feminist shit afterwards.
But that's less the movie causing the break up and more the true nature of whoever starts ranting. The movie just held up a mirror and the person who rants shows who they are.
I watched it with some girl friends of mine and the amount of dialogue this movie opened was incredible. So many women talking to each other with honesty afterwards in the lobby - I've not seen that before. It was quite something.
So the movie doesn't cause the break ups. It just reminds some people of what they can and should stand up for.
