My ex says he still loves me, but takes forever to reply?

Me and my ex are first loves, we decided to breakup for a lot of reasons.. we both said we want to breakup for now, but hopefully try again in the future/this year (it's complicated)

I went no contact for a while as I was finding it hard to talk to him, then when I came back I said lets just try and be friends and move on with no expectations as it was stressing us both out, then we started speaking again.. it was fast responses to begin with, but now he sometimes takes 3 days to reply, and often takes 20 hours to respond.. this is really weird as usually he'd always reply fairly quickly, and I feel like I'm the one chasing him now.. in the past I've always been the one who's a bit more obsessed over him or going out of my way to message, I've finally managed go get control over that and was taking a while to respond my self, however the more I have done that and have stopped being so obsessed over him, he's now taking days at a time to reply or making me wait forever.

Could he be loosing interest? Or does it sound like he wants the control again/to get me to chase him? Should I just backed off?
