Ex boyfriend keeps contacting me through mutual friends?

My ex boyfriend broke up with me for another girl 8 months ago. I have had ZERO communication with him since the day of the break up. This is now the SECOND time within those 8 months that he has reached out to mutual friends of ours telling them to tell me he misses me, wants to get back together, he will break up with his girlfriend for me, he isn’t locked in, etc.. However, he is STILL with this other girl and continues to be. I told my mutual friends tell him absolutely not! He has a girlfriend! My question is … What is he doing?

He's Unhappy in His Current Relationship!

This is the most obvious reason. He might be realizing that the “new and shiny” has worn off, and he's finding his current relationship unsatisfying.
