Ex boyfriend told me he misses my face. What does he mean?

My ex bf dumped me 3 years ago. A few days ago, he wrote to me on fb and asked me how I had been. Then he went on to ask if he could have my number, which I gave him.

Anyway, today he texted me asking me how I had been and all of a sudden said 'I miss your face'. I just said 'okay' and left it at that. He went on to say that he didn't mean it like that, but just overall.

Why was he saying that he missed my face?
