I suck at texting girls, how am I suppose to text?

Every time I text a girl, the conversation isn't really long and is kind of boring and the same. Like here is what would happen.

Me: Hey hows out going
Her: Nm u?
Me: same, any plans for the rest of the day
Her: Nah i have to work all day today
Me: Oh that sucks

Then that would be the end. I don't know how to continue on a conversation. Am I doing something wrong or is a short conversation like this acceptable?

Instead of asking what she's doing the rest of the day ask in advance as most people would already have plans for the day. So say hey what're you doing Saturday? Then say whatever else you want to ask her to do. I like it when guys are straight toward

Come up with something completely random like "how well do you think giraffes can swim?" or "I wonder if my landlord has a landlord" or "I just saw a shopping bag chase away a bird"
