Why do girls say they like nerdy guys?
but they dont understand what a real nerd is. THIS is a nerd:
I don't know if you're bashing his looks more or his hobby.
Looks wise, people have different tastes, and looks don't determine the label 'nerd' at least for me.
'Nerd' more describes the personality of those of us who continue to enjoy 'childish' interests and activities into adulthood, like video games, card and board games; engaging in fandom via online discussion, buying merch, attending gatherings/conventions etc.; and are openly enthusiastic about things which mainstream society either doesn't value or only values to a point past which enthusiasm for it is seen as excessive.
In a guy yeah, I really do appreciate those qualities; being fun, passionately interested in things, unapologetic about innocent things which make him happy and authentically himself even when it doesn't benefit him in social hierarchies.
However, hello; being a 'nerd' is in vogue at the moment. Not just because of 'Hollywood Homely' type 'nerds' and the co-opting of nerd aesthetics by hipsters and the like; but because video games are now a booming industry catering to all ages, as are sci fi and fantasy tv shows and movies- we forget that people were once bullied for even mentioning that they liked these genres, but in a post Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings world, that's so over. 'Nerdy' franchises are having major mainstream commercial success; look at Game of Thrones, all the superhero movies currently coming out, etc. These things aren't niche any more, they're the norm, because they're fun, good things. Which is why it's so embarrassing seeing tvland lagging wayy behind real life on that issue, a (perhaps THE) main culprit being The Big Bang Theory, whose treatment of nerd culture is utterly bizarre in the context of the actual present cultural climate. You can bash us as much as you like for it, but millenials too are widely experiencing an 'extended adolescence'; we're refusing to spurn the things we loved from our childhood in favour of traditional markers of maturity. And sure, a lot of that is less to do with choice and more with us being broke as fuck and so not being able to afford to move out, own cars, etc. But it's also that we're beginning to recognize that adulthood doesn't have to be all about duty and sacrificing pleasure for professionalism or whatever.
Contempt for male nerds stems from toxic masculinity, plain and simple. Nerds are very often the antithesis of society's ideal for masculinity; not being physically strong or concerned with sports or ruthless business but instead loving learning for its own sake; being creative and enjoying art and fiction; not being domineering or brazen but quiet and submissive; appearing 'child-like', etc. Ie.: The nerd stereotype tends to be coded feminine, and under patriarchy the feminine is treated as shameful and inferior.
That's not to say misogyny isn't a big problem within nerd communities, but this I would argue stems very largely from the treatment male nerds receive from other men and/or how they perceive themselves to be perceived by others. It's bizarre but very well noted in psychology that those who suffer abuse often don't seek solidarity with those further down social hierarchies than them but punch down, continuing the cycle of abuse.
Note: I acknowledge big issues with nerd culture when it comes to gender but I in no way mean to say that all male nerds are like this. Nor do I mean to imply that every non nerdy man is abusive towards male nerds and women. But it is a norm embedded in our cultures and that is a big problem.
@Tony_1693 I feel strongly about this subject :')
Some people confuse the nerdy attitiude with nerdy looks
I think by what they mean, is that they like the stereotypical, well dresses, glasses wearer dudes. Not the weird nerds who can't carry a conversation.
If a man who looks like this asks me out, I would be delighted. He has the nerdy look, but most probably isn't a nerd.

That's not even a nerdy look. That's just a guy with glasses.
@Anywayysss I'm dying your bang on :D
you're*
before she corrects me...
To me, a nerd is someone who has academic interests, likes problem-solving and/or having intellectual discussions, and is an avid book-reader. (That's what I mean when I call myself a nerd, anyway). It has nothing to do with appearance or hobbies.
That's my own personal definition, though. I understand that there are stereotypes attached to it and there's more than one type of "nerd".
Because after college is over the geeky guy will probably have the nice house; the nice car; the comfortable well paid job and the social kudos that comes with all of those things.
There is a difference between nerdy and disgusting.

Pretty sure nerds can come in different looks lol that guy in the picture of above can still be like that guy in the video and be a dueling yugioh master. And guess what, some women would be instantly turned off by it regardless of how fine he looks. O and my man is the same and I don't care lol
Plus that kids a beast cause it takes skills to that, boyfriend has magic cards and I still have to learn that.
Why guys say they like nerdy girls?

na that isn't a fair comparison. The girl on the left looks like a typical hoe in a night club... they are talking about this sort of look...

it's more of a geek thing, i think xD EFDKVJKRJDE he likes gaming, comic books, reading, gaming, anime, manga. i like because the type of nerdy/geeky boys i met were all hella cute. they're shy, but they talk. they have this innocent aura, but they know about sex (surely). they're just interesting, I don't know :c i don't like plain boys that i figure out in 2 seconds.
I think what they mean is that they like intellectual guys, intelligent
Id say my boyfriend is a nerd, but he looks much closer to the first picture. he's an avid MTG player, plays dnd twice a week and enjoys WOW. there's a balance to everything.
Wow as in world of Warcraft?
@ICantthinkofa
Yes
Not to split hairs on this, but your definition of a "nerd" is what I've always called a "geek".
Cuz they're usually cute and nice. Unlike some guys who are jerks
I know what a real nurd is but I don't know. Why girls do that
cause grant gustin is one of the most adorable/dorky/cute humans to ever walk on this earth.
They’re cute af. They’re nice and I feel comfortable when talking to them
They imagine nerdy guys like handsome guy with glasses
Cause it's a 50/50 chance that they end up getting a super high-paying job.
Grant Gustin is not a nerd. He is the FLASH!!!
