Why would you act uninterested when a guy asks you out but tell your best friend that you really like this guy?

You're a shy girl who's invited a guy out for birthday celebrations with your friends and you showed signs of interest, but he asks you out and you can't make it because you have to go away for the weekend and you don't offer an alternate day? Then he asks if you're free during the week but you tell him you'll let him know tomorrow when you find out your work schedule for the week, however the next day you don't tell him.. You're not interested, right?

This is what's happened to me, but I work with her best friend's mum and she's said that this girl has mentioned she really likes me but doesn't have money right now and is too embarrassed to say and doesn't want to go out with me so that I have to pay for everything.

What do you make of this? I'm thinking of mentioning that I feel it's like a brush off and i'll take the hint and leave it. I guess if she does like me, she won't want me to go but if she doesn't act bothered then she didn't actually like me.
