What does it mean to "wish things could be different"?

Does it mean to want something? My guy friend said he wishes things could be different after I stated I liked him but understood we are friends.

It's his religion. He says he has feelings for me, I personally think he meant that he wishes his situation was different so we could be together. Something tells me that he's going to at least try to make things work but he's waiting for the right time.
