I am a virgin by choice. I do often feel envious that people around me are enjoying incomparable ecstasy, so it happens the other way too.
But I agree, I think a lot of non-virgins are envious that virgins are strong willed and confident enough to think seriously about sex and wait for it. Guys also get territorial over pussy and hate other guys who get virgins.
Some people say the whole "females aren't defined by their sex life, you should be happy with a girl no matter how many people she's had sex with" thing.
