I means I'm socially awkward and I'm afraid that I'm going to accidentally offend them or say something stupid meeting people face-to-face I usually mess up. So instead of doing what they want which is them begging and begging for me to hang out with them I just stop talking to them because I can't convince them not to keep trying to convince me.

I think your being a little too harsh on yourself. unless you have Asperger's Syndrome which makes you REALLY socially awkward I wouldn't know why you feel that way in the first place. Me, I'd tell the person through pm that things aren't working out and if they can't except that then I'd block them. But if they do accept it I feel better about because I know I'm not leaving someone in the dark and them not knowing what they did wrong or not.

Ghosting isn't always bad. Some situations a simple complete cut off of contact is warranted. But just dropping off the planet after a normal conversation is a bit infuriating.

Yes and no. People have done it all throughout human existence. This era, it's easily done through technology. In times past, it was done via pen pal and what not.

So I'd say no not really.

I never seen it before. Ghosting in any kind of form was not accepted. And also on chat I never encountered it before a year ago.

I wouldn't say it's a full blown societal issue. Sure there are tons of people who do it, but people are assholes by nature and have always done it.
