*CONDENSED ANSWER*. I GET BUTTERFLIES BEFORE MY FOOTBALL GAMES. *LONG DRAGGED OUT ANSWER.* **** I'M AN ( American) FOOTBALL ( not soccer) REFEREE***** for junior college and high school levels.
So its a Friday afternoon during the fall or winter. My work day and work week is over, at my full-time job. Its 5:00pm, game time kickoff is at 7:05 my 5 man crew and I will be meeting at the high school locker room or college at 6:00 pm. I check my phone, for any guys or girls who might be late or worse. Rarely does that happen though.
I check my duffle bag one last time, even though I packed and double checked it the night before.
I'm ready for the 45 minute drive to the school. I put in the same cd that I've listened to for 20 years before my games. The group CHICAGO greatest hits, I start with 25 or 6,2,4, as I get on the freeway. I escape from anything football and my occupation, for 30 minutes. I slam down some orange juice and eat a granola bar. I'm relaxed pulling in the 3/4 full parking lot. Soon followed by my crew. Its a mixed crew of veteran officials and second year officials. I'm relaxed as I greet everyone. We studied Tuesday and watched more training videos. I've texted them reminders through the week and answered questions.
We make it to the locker room. I quickly use the private shower, and wash off my real job, and scratch my brain for any last second preparation. We exchange small talk about our jobs, kids or college, while we change. Gradually its all about preparation we talk about as we get ready. Its 6:40. Ready to take the field

One last check in the mirror.
One last check for flags, whistles , bean bags ( dont ask) and a coin for the coin toss. ( I forgot one only once) The door opens and its the walk from locker room to the field that THE BUTTERFLIES HIT ME. Millions of them fill my veins. Always have for 20 years. All but a couple disappear the second I step on the grass or field turf. I sprint to the 50 yard line ignoring the smattering of boos, I exhale deeply the couple of butterflies out. I'm ready.
