I am new to dating how often should I text?

So, after a very long term relationship, 13 years to be exact, I decided to start dating a year later after it ended. I ran into a guy I knew years ago but we never hung out. We were texting everyday until I noticed him seeming distant so I stopped texting him. After exactly 1 week of not hearing from him, he text and asks why I haven’t text him and if I’ve been thinking about him. I mean I don’t want to seem desperate and text him too much and I also don’t want to be anybody’s fool. If he wants to hear from me then why does he go hot and cold? One week he will text everyday day then he will barely text at all.

Because our ego is in the way, I know we all are afraid of rejection but we gotta take shots once in a while. I guess that's what romance is.

This happens with me and my wife, she is looking after her mother during the epidemic as she is old and very vulnerable. So we can go like a week without texting then we will just facetime each other every night then repeat again. If he is just completely airing you or not even looking at the message I would go ask him in person about it.
