It's kinda both, but the contemporary Valentine's Day is just like contemporary Christmas: an artfully made marketing campaign that created a consumerist utopia (for the companies, and an ad-filled jingle commercial nightmare for everyone else).

If we were to celebrate the actual feast of St. Valentine's, we'd have a quiet family meal where we're thankful for those we love and where we feed the poor and destitute.

If we were to celebrate Lupercalia (my preference), we'd get naked, dance around a fire, and then hot naked men would run around slapping people with cured goat dicks to bless them with fertility and sex.

My vote is for Lupercalia. Ideally sans goat dick but with the sex and dancing.

Corporate greed is a good thing. Greed motivates risk takes to start new companies, offer new products, lower prices to compete and gain more market share. Corperate greed is merely a recent rebranding of “success” used by people who do not understand the simplest basics of economics. Every “greedy” buck made off Valentine’s Day cards, flowers, sex toys etc will help keep people employed, keep companies in business, and allow normal people who work at those “greedy companies” to pay their bills, and support their families. Multi-Million dollar bailouts, golden parachutes etc, are a SEPARATE issue and better fits the term “greed.”

I don't know what it is except something I have no use for. Here is my stance: I show my love to my girlfriend/wife every single day in different ways. I give her gifts for her birthday, wedding anniversary, and just because. I really don't need some cheesy ass 'holiday' to remind me treat my partner with love.

There is actual history of him. Then came greed/capitalism/clever marketing schematics and they monetized everything: Valentines day, marriage, divorce and more. I'm surprised we aren't being charged yet to breathe clean air.

The objective of corporations is to capitalize -- the bottom line is the bottom line. Whether or not Valentine's day was made to sell candy or not is irrelevant to grocery stores, Hershey's, Mars, and Kellogg's during the entire month of February. But, culturally, we probably did just decide one day that we would have a particular holiday to celebrate love itself.

I think I was about 5 or 6 when I understood a bit about Valentines Day. 5 decades later it is still my least favorite and hokey time of the year. I like the chocolates though when they go on sale after Valentines day. And you can pick up some pretty inexpensive roses on the 15th as well.

That was a good article! St. Valentine was a to Christianity. He embodied heroic virtue and love. It makes sense to celebrate love in all its forms because God is love ❤️

There's probably an element of truth to it. Here we have st Dwynwen day on 25th jan which is the same thing but less commercialised. If he forgets that one then he better remember Valentine's day or his life isn't worth living
